I'm not a big fan of mobile puzzle games. I realize that mobile is especially suited to the genre, but whenever I turn on my phone to play something, I typically go for something with a little more action. Plus, there are just so many darn games in this genre. So, whenever I am interested in a puzzle game it's usually because it draws me in with a unique aesthetic and gameplay premise. As was the case with Yellow.
Whereas most pyzzle games go for calm and contemplative, Yellow oozes a simple, classy style that has a sort of Ocean’s 11 feel. The music and visuals are spot on, making you feel as if you're in the middle of a heist. Even though everything is done simply, it all feels professional. In addition to being a refreshing tone to strike, the game's style also reinforces the gameplay. The tone compels you to pull off each puzzle with as cool a demeanor as possible, which turns out to be a nice challenge due to the variety in the gamee's puzzle design.
Yellow eschews the most common central mechanics like connect three things or make a path for one thing. Instead, every one of its 50 levels has as their main goal to turn the screen completely yellow. This is accompllished in a different way each level, and they all aim to surprise. The puzzles make you feel like you've outsmarted the house when you finally catch on to what's going on. However, I did solve a few of the puzzlles by randomly bumbling about the screen which made me feel a tad less suave.
Yellow is a neat experience. It's clever. It looks smooth and sounds sophisticated. It mirrors everything I want to be when I play a puzzle game. And, it fits perfectly into the mobile use case. It seems like there are ads, but I didn't run intoo a single one of them. There is a hint system which I never used, so maybe they're all in there. Anywway, the barrier to entry is real low on this one, and Yellow is definitely worth the look.
