PC gaming company, Razer, recently expanded into the mobile market with its first phone late last year, and the consensus seems to be that the phone is a beast. It’s got a 5.7 inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, dual front facing speakers, a Snapdragon 835 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a monstrous 4,000 mAh battery. It costs $700, but that’s to be expected for a phone of this caliber.
With a solid phone on the market, Razer now has a stage to display its experience with gaming peripherals. Razer could make a gamepad for its phone that actually works. Unlike the Moto Z gamepad, a gamepad built by Razer would benefit from all the experience the company has making accessories for the PC gaming market, and some of Razer’s early projects indicate that they are already making hardware that integrates tightly with the Razer phone. At Mobile World Congress, they showed off one of their gaming laptops that had a slot for the Razer phone, so that it could function as a second display, a track pad, and a speaker system. This was just a concept, but it shows that Razer is thinking seriously about how to enhance the gaming aspect of the Razer phone with additional hardware made in house. Now would be a perfect time for Razer to swoop in and take mobile gaming to the next level by making a proper controller.
Razer might also be interested in reserving a spot in the games streaming market. If it has people interested in it's mobile gaming hardware, I believe it would have an easier time selling a potential Netflix-like games streaming service to those customers. This strategy is similar to Nvidia’s approach with its Shield devices, but I think Razer chose the better path, going into phones instead of tablets. And again, Razer has experience with gaming accessories that can be leveraged in this new market.
The idea of a gaming phone might seem strange to a lot of people, but many enthusiasts like myself have been anticipating the eventual maturation of the platform, and it feels like it’s coming soon. Razer, with its PC experience and excellent first phone, seems poised to get us going in the right direction.
